1. Walk, bike, ride the bus or join a carpool. If you can walk or bike, then in addition to saving money on gas, you will also improve your health. Imagine a benefit like that! And if you catch the bus, you can sleep, or do some reading instead of driving.

2. Reduce your commute by moving closer to work or working closer to home. This will save time as well as gas money. You may even be able to save even more gas money by becoming a one-car family.  Not everyone can do this, so don’t go quitting your job just to do this, but it can help.

3. Combine trips. If you can do several short trips in one longer trip, you will save fuel and time. Make lists to avoid having to go back. Call ahead to avoid wasted trips. We talked about this before, but one of the best ways to save gas money is to be more efficient.  What a great way to save gas.

4. Walk between stops. Once you get into town, some of your stops may be near each other. Park between some or all of them and walk.  In big cities, many people do lots of walking.  You may need to invest in a little cart to carry stuff, but again you are saving gas so it is worth it.

5. Park in the first spot you find. If you wander all over the parking lot looking for that really close parking space, you’ll use more gas. Don’t be afraid to walk a ways if it comes to that - the walk will do you good!

Most modern cars don’t require premium gas unless they are sports cars, and buying the premium, high-octane gas won’t do anything extra for your gas mileage. There is much debate on this subject, but mechanics I have spoken to agree that the higher octane does nothing for the average car. Check with your handy dandy mechanic to see what they think about saving money on gas by using regular octane.

Join your gas station’s reward’s program. Some gas stations have nice loyalty programs. Many offer a discount off the gallon price, some just offer points for other stuff. 1. Save money on gas by buying a diesel. Diesel cars can often get better mileage than comparable hybrids. Getting a diesel car also allows you to save money on gas because you can use bio-diesel or even waste vegetable oil (WVO/SVO) fuel in the vehicle.
2. Buy a hybrid. Not only do hybrids help you save gas money, the U.S. government and your local state offer tax breaks for those who are going to use gas saving cars. Federal deductions for using gas-saving cars can be as high as $2,000, but check before buying to see if they’re still in effect. Keep in mind that a Hybrid is more expensive than a regular car, so you need to compare the purchase price to the actual gas savings by switching. In some cases, it may not make sense.
