Here are some easy steps on how to save money on gas.

# Don’t fill until the last quarter tank. If you do this, it can extend your gas because you are hauling a lighter load as the tank nears empty. Remeber what we talked about in earlier posts, to save money on gas, you need to minimize resistance, and that means less weight! This also allows you to buy gas on low-cost days which are usually Wednesday. However, in cold weather, you run an increased risk of condensation in the fuel tank, and moisture mixed with gas is not good for the engine. Keep in mind, you now your habits and your area. Make sound decision based on you. You know your driving needs, so make sure you have enough gas in the tank to make it to the next gas station at any time.

# Fill the tank full. If you need to fill up, fill up all the way. The more money you try to save by adding $10 today and then $20 tomorrow will be wasted since each time you will have to travel to the station and wait for a pump. Instead, do it all at once to save time and money. The exception to this would be if your route takes you by a station and you actually are not going out of your way to get gas. If you are going out of your way, then fill up the gas tank.

# Don’t top off the tank. It is wasted money and bad for the environment since the extra gas evaporates in 10 minutes of driving. Once the auto detector triggers the stop. Take the nozzle out of the tank and pay. In addition to evaporation, you also run the risk of over flowing the tank and wasting that gas on the driveway.

# Buy gas on Wednesday. Gas prices are statistically the cheapest on Wednesdays, but this is only statistically true over a large number of days. It won’t be true every week. So plan on being religious about your purchase days. If you cannot stay consistent, then you run the risk of actually not saving any money on gas.

# Buy gas three days before a holiday. Gas prices almost always go up for holidays. This is especially true for big summer holidays like Memorial day and Fourth of July. When the supply goes way up, and demand stays consistent, then you can expect to pay more for gas.

Take these pointers and you will soon know all there is to know about how to save money on gas.
