Here is a car tip to save money on gas. By being aware of what you are doing with your gas pedal, and using some of the natural momentum you buildup, you can save money on gas by almost being lazy!

When you start to move forward, accelerate smoothly. Hard starts and stops use a lot more fuel than gradually accelerating. When you hit the gas hard, you cause lots of gas to be used as your engine needs to go into over drive to try to get the momentum going quickly. If you start and stop frequently, you waste the natural momentum created when you accelerated.

Coast to a stop. Coasting uses less gas and another added benefit is extended brake life.

Drive the speed limit (or close). The national speed limit was limited to 55 during oil crisis in the 70’s. This was done to limit the amount of fuel vehicles consumed. The limits have gone back up, but the principle remains the same. Driving slower generally improves gas mileage. The optimimum range is that 55. When you go over that number, your mileage goes down as you are no longer efficient. You will find that you can coast more at 55, but need to keep you foot on the gas pedal when going faster.

Drive at a steady speed or use cruise control. Quickly speeding up and slowing down uses more gas than driving at a steady speed. This goes back to the point about driving irratically. Utilize cruise control if your car has it. Otherwise, monitor your speed. Be sure to turn off your cruise control when going up large hills! Additionally, traffic and stop lights kill gas mileage. If you can drive during off peak hours, you will be better off.

Combine trips. Most cars are more efficient when their engines are warm. Combining trips will also reduce the amount of back and forth driving, reducing your total mileage. If you can combine your trips to being during off peak, you can save money on gas as you are consolidating, and you are staying out of traffic.

Avoid idling. An idling engine wastes gasoline. Turn your car off if you are going to be stopped more than 30 seconds (this is actually a law in many European locations). Unless you have an old carbureted engine, you won’t use more gas restarting your engine than you would have by idling. This may mean you have to stop using the drive through! Think about it, how much time do you save at the drive through? I think you actually spend more time waiting…and idling. And that means when you are waitng for the kids, turn off the car and roll down the windows instead of using the AC!
